Joe & Mildred Earnst had a dream of bringing radio and TV to Wyoming. In 1945 they moved to Worland to build KWOR. They soon open a station in Riverton and KGOS in Torrington. In 1955, they put KRTR in Thermopolis on the air. Later, Joe convinced Mildred that Northern WY needed a TV Station. In 1957, after much difficulty, they put up a station – KWRV TV. The first program to air in color was Bonanza! As much as Mildred loved TV, her first love was radio. She loved sports and radio. They received the Pioneer Award by the WAB, first one ever presented. They were pioneers to Wyoming radio and television to open new areas of WY to broadcasters, which benefited thousands of people. They sold their stations in 1980 and retired in Thermopolis. Later that year, Mildred died and in 1999, Joe died at the age of 93. Although they are both gone, there are many stories of the creativity and ingenuity they both had to bring “broadcasting” to Wyoming. Wyoming benefited greatly from their vision!
